Sometime back I saw the trailer and a few scenes of the film “POSEIDON”. One particular scene affected me a lot. First of all, for those who haven’t watched the film and don’t know anything about it (I think most of u would know, but still for my satisfaction), the main storyline is that a big ship turns fully upside down when hit by a giant wave and only a couple of them finally escape death. Well, I also haven’t watched the film but have heard the story. Coming to the point, in a particular scene, a lift would be about to collapse and two guys would be trying to save those caught in the lift. One of the servants aboard will help an old guy to stand on a plank kind of thing so that the rescue team can pull him up. Suddenly the lift will go further down and the plank will also fall down. By then both the servant and the old guy would be hanging in the air with the rescue team holding the old guy’s hand and the servant clinging on to the guy’s leg. Since both of them together would be too much of a weight, the rescue team would ask the old guy to let go of the servant. Otherwise all of them would have to die. First, the guy will hesitate as the servant had helped him out initially. But when he sees the lift going further down and realizing that his life is endangered, immediately he will kick the servant. The old guy would be pulled up safely at the cost of the servant’s life.
Why this scene had an impact on me was that when a do or die situation comes, we cannot think about the pros and cons of what we do or how our deed will affect others. We just go ahead without second thoughts even if it means an ultimate harm to another person. I was just wondering whether the old guy would have a peaceful life after this or would he be constantly haunted by the guilty feeling that he killed a guy who saved him. On second thoughts I feel that I would also have done the same thing if I had been in that guy’s place. Our life is more precious than any value or virtue that we might hold. Of course it doesn’t mean that we need to compromise on our values or virtues always. Only if such do or die situations occur or our life is at stake, the above stand holds good. What do u feel?
Disclaimer: I haven’t watched the movie and I don’t know the context in which this scene comes. So if I had made any mistake in explaining the scene, just leave it. I want your opinions on my view more importantly.

Rommmmmmmba think pandreenga....but yes...there was a famous Akbar Birbal story on the same lines to explain the preciousness of our own life when it comes to disaster.
Btw...i heard that the movie was a big AWWWWWWWWW..so dont watch it :-) (Da Vinci code ban paneetangalam???Congrats TamilNadu)
well, This is reality...so reality always hurts...so it has affected you, i assume...
Jettison - a word which i remeber to throw away things from the ship to save it from sinking due to over weight, fits here perfectly...
There is a famous saying "thanaku poga thaan thanamum, dharmamum" so when it comes to life issues, that's what everyone would have done.:)
7hrs /week thaan TV parkarenga, athuke ivlo feelings of India va?;)
harish,
Even I've heard the story of Akbar/Birbal. But adhula Birbal escapes because of his clever move and not at the cost of another person's life. After that, to teach the wrong-doers a lesson, he will play a game.
And I am not going to watch that movie. Oru scene ke ivlo yosikaren approm motha padam paathutu mandaiya pichipen
krk,
Good Analogy :-)
Gopalan,
Naa paakum bothellaam ippdi edhaavadhu amaiyardhu. Adhuvum I saw this two weeks back but ippo thaan post panren
Ms...Pudhupettai padathula oru dialog varum.....Dhanush leaves his new born son in kuppa thotti..and says this....ennada appan unnai kuppayila poduranenu parkariya......Uyir vazharathu thanda mukiyam, matha ellatha vidavum"....And thats absolutely true...there is no right or wrong there...
First thing, you have explained the scene very well, it's the same what I saw in Sun TV (thirai vimarsanam). Regarding my personal opinion, I would have done the same thing as what the old guy did. So you are right that I will surely be haunted by this guilty feeling. However, I would try to search for the servant's family and try to help them out in whichever way possible (Dont think I'm trying to act as a noble person here!) However I dont know if that old guy survives till end as I too haven't watched it yet.
First its tough to decide ,just pary we should not be put in any such situation.
There are people who respect others life life than theirs.
The JAWANS of india.
hi!
saw the movie. practically there are only two options in that scene as the time was ticking (remember, as the old man himself survives only just, even after he kicks the hanging guy). 1. the old man lets go the hanging guy and survives or 2. both of them die
now, it does not look such a tough decision. or isit?
see nice thought provoking post!,,,,,,,,,,but if u r in the state of the servant guy ..how shocking it would be...nallathu panni aliyanumngrappo...it happens in real life also...u help around people and get a bad name and put yourslf in a soup...rarher be polite and keep to yourself...nalla perum illa ketta perum illa above all u r safe!
I dunno wht I wud do if I were in the old mans position! Its just too tough to let go of another life. And yes its gonna be a haunting thing for the rest of the life like u rightly said.
At the same time there is no other good option out. God save me from such crisis!
good debatable post...its tuf to put in words, we don know how we react when it happend to us....
everything depends on cirumstances.....
CHeers!
:)
bharani,
Kuppai thotti la podrathuku pethukave vendaame!!Powerful dialogue, though I don't agree with the context in which it is used in the film
delhi_tamilan,
That's a nice one. That kind gesture will surely reduce the guilty feeling to a great extent
:-)
ganeshram,
Am talking abt common man. The jawans are surely noble souls :-)
sathya,
Welcome here :-) It is surely not a tough decision. Obviously his life is more important. I was just feeling bad that he was put in such a position in which he can live only if he left the guy who saved him to die
shuba,
Actually I got a saying that "The good you do today, people will often forget tomorrow; do good anyway". Because it is GOD and not them who are going to evaluate u. I believe in it.
has to be me,
I am also praying for the same
:-)
the protector,
Hope we aren't put in such situations
ithu inglees padama? Its all part of dream world so don't get much involved with the stories in the movies, its a pure entertainment
Very true... when it comes to ur life... nothing in the world seems more important at that point of time...
Of course the old man will suffer the guilt of having caused the death of another... but it it human tendency to react that way...u cant account for ur values at that time.. all that matters is ur life... unless one is really strong and determined by heart to brave such a situation, there is no other option... afterall... if there is one thing in this world that most of us fear,it is Death...
syam,
But sometimes such situations can occur in real life also..not necessarily the same situation(naan laam life la ship la travel panna no chance) but similar kind of tight situations..just hope that it does not come
prithz,
very true :-)
I thought of writing the same comments written by sathya. There was only two options. One should die or both.
Similar kind of scene is there in 'Day after tommorrow'. But in that movie, the last person dies voluntarily.
balag,
Yes there are only two options but the fact that choosing one will mean the demise of someone who saved him is disturbing
admirable existence,
I am extremely happy to hear that this post had a positive influence on you :-)
Very true post..And I concur with ur views ms cong :)..good one :)
