Earlier I had mentioned that I was obsessed about “Masala Dosai”. This post is about another such obsession I have since my childhood. I have a very bad habit. I always get excited when my parents and I go out for purchasing new dresses for various occasions. I just cannot wait for the occasion to arrive. As soon as we get back home after the purchase, even if it is late in the evening, I have to wear the new dress atleast for five minutes. My parents tried to tell me that the basic purpose for getting a dress for an occasion is to wear it “new” on the day of the occasion. But I never used to listen to them. Finally they thought of a plan. My parents used to buy the dress and lock it safe in the cupboard. They’ll tell me that they haven’t bought the dress. They will “release” it only on the day of the occasion. Poor me!! This was when I was very small and I was not smart enough to realize their “master” plan. Later on this did not work out as I would find out the “treasure” by rummaging throughout the cupboard. Later when I started buying salwar materials, they made sure that the tailor didn’t stitch it till the occasion. Even if I get the dress stitched one day before the occasion, I will wear it once before the occasion.
Finally my parents gave up on this matter. Hence to this day, I am following the “ritual” of wearing the new dress (atleast!!!!) once before the occasion. Many a time, I have purchased long before the occasion and hence before the occasion arrives I would have worn the dress two or three times. In that case I’d get a bonus dress to wear for the occasion on the pretext that the dress I’d bought earlier has become old(not literally, but can’t be called as new anyway). Even now I have a new dress at home as my birthday is coming up in a few weeks time. Since I wanted to get rid of this habit, I’ve been trying real hard not to get tempted. But I don’t know how long I can control myself!!!!!!
